The final concert of The Reef Tour at the Sydney Opera House last night ( 7pm Mon 23 July ) brought the house down and roused a standing ovation from the sold out Concert Hall – a most fitting finale to an unforgettable tour!

The Reef in Broome

Audiences from Darwin to Perth are raving about the success of The Reef program. From the power of Mick Sowry and Jon Frank’s film, the virtuosity of Richard Tognetti, the passion of ACO2, the soul of Steve Pigram and Mark Frank to the raw energy of Clay McDonald – The Reef has provided audiences from the North to the West an experience to remember for a lifetime . With just one final sold out concert left in Sydney next week, The Reef tour is almost over and it certainly has been a wild ride. Here’s just some of the images from a very dramatic performance at Cable Beach Amphitheatre in Broome.

Over 1500 people packed Cable Beach Amphitheatre in Broome alone for the magic of The Reef outdoors under the stars.

Illustrating the Reef

Illustrator Hugo Muecke was invited to tag along on the long journey from the East to the West Coast for The Reef Residency by Taylor Miller and Derek Hyne to document the trip through his drawings. These illustrations are very much inspired by the landscape and while simplistic and even somewhat whimiscal, bely a depth that reflects the intricacies of the journey and the many complexities of The Reef itself. Educating the Reef

The Reef Residency touched so many within the local community and generated a groundswell of excitement for the project which is still being felt round the nation, before the Reef Tour even starts. We’ve already heard of its impact on the surfing community, the chefs, the media, the film makers and now the local school community.

During the Reef Residency, musician and educator Gillian Howell, brought together a number of young musicians from Canarvon and Geraldton to compose a series of original works inspired by the spectacular coastline of the Gnaraloo Reef . They worked with the members of the ACO over three days at the local St Mary Star of the Sea School which culminated in a final packed concert at Carnarvon’s Camel Lane Theatre. The final result was jaw dropping given the students’ youth and ability and you can read more of this experience on Gillian’s blog. Below are just some of the photos that were taken from these workshops, taken by Chris Duczynski. The artists of The Reef will be presenting a number of workshops as part of The Reef Tour which kicks off in just over a week in Darwin on July 5.
